Higher welfare standards for broilers

News Section Icon Veröffentlicht 26.08.2015

In the latest of our Food Business case studies you can find out how leading chicken producer in Poland, SPA Food, has been working closely with Compassion to introduce their higher welfare indoor chicken production system.

For the past few years, SPA Food has been working with their farmers to introduce higher welfare standards for their broilers focussing on the following:

  • Ensuring adequate space in the broiler sheds for better behavioural expression
  • Providing enrichment such as pecking objects, perches and natural light
  • Exploring how best to avoid negative impacts on leg health

With technical support from Compassion and through an education programme with their farmers, they have been able to open up new business opportunities as they are able to start supplying significant volumes of higher welfare chicken (and specific portions) at competitive prices to their retailer and food service customers across Europe.

By raising the baseline standards of broiler welfare in their market and by committing to provide higher welfare products to their customers, SPA Food was recognised with a Good Chicken Award in 2013.

If you need technical support from Compassion on how to introduce your own higher welfare production system for broilers, please contact the Food Business team.
